Matt
Bera is a 35-year old native Californian who grew up in Rocklin
and now lives with his family in Cameron Park. Matt and his high-school
sweetheart, Lauri, have been married for 15 years and have three
beautiful children: Megan age 13, Lauren, 10 and Nicolas, 4.
In
addition to being a loving husband and father, Matt has been saving
lives as a Sacramento City Firefighter & Paramedic since 1995
and was recently promoted to Apparatus Operator/Engineer.
In
February 2004, Matt was diagnosed with an extremely rare form
of cancer called Desmoplastic Small Cell Round Tumor (DSCRT),
an aggressive cancer that mostly afflicts young men. There are
very few effective treatment options to combat this type of cancer.
A positive outcome is based upon 100 percent surgical removal
of all the tumors. Matt and Lauri have traveled to MD Anderson
Cancer Center in Houston, one of a few hospitals that have experience
with this rare form of cancer. The travel costs and many of the
medical expenses are not covered by insurance.
Friends,
family, and colleagues of the Beras have rallied together
to host a Fundraising Event. This celebration will include dinner,
live music, and auctions. Our goal is to raise $250,000 to be
put into a trust account to help with current and future expenses.
A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the charitable foundation
of Matts choosing.
The
out pour of love and support from the Beras family, friends
and community has been a phenomenal
help to them through this difficult time. We have created this
website in order to tell you the story of who Matt Bera is and
about the cancer that has afflicted this young man. We also hope
that you may find the ability to support Matt and his family through
prayer, donations, emotional support and/or increasing awareness
about this disease.
